Why We Shouldn’t Ban The AR-15

Now, we’ve all heard about the school shootings, we’ve seen the ads on television and the internet, and we all have heard Beto O’Rourke say “**** yes, we will take your AR-15”. The fact that this man said that, in particular, made me choose this topic for this post. The AR-15 is a weapon that should not be banned because it is a great defense tool, rifles kill comparatively fewer people than, and most shootings were done with handguns.

First, the AR-15 is a great self and home defense weapon. For example, while searching the Internet, I found this gem on the NRA website. Man uses AR-15 to defend self and girlfriend. This happened in Philadelphia on 04/25/13. And, believe it or not, this is not the only one. There’s a few more on the site.

Next, rifles, including the AR-15, kill fewer people annually than, blunt objects, sharp-edged weapons, and hands and feet. According to Statista, rifles killed 297 people, while blunt objects killed 443 people, hands and feet killed 672 people, and edged weapons killed 1,515 people. Granted, this was all from 2017, but three years shouldn’t have had much difference. Look at the numbers, you can see them.

Now, some might talk about all the mass shootings done in the past with AR-15 platform rifles. Admiringly, a fair amount of shootings have been done with AR-15’s, but the deadliest school shooting, Virginia Tech, and the first widely known school shooting, Columbine, weren’t done with AR-15’s. In fact, according to Statista, out of 167 mass shootings done from 1982 to 2019, the majority of them were undertaken with handguns.

In conclusion, the AR-15 shouldn’t be banned. Not only for the reasons listed above, but for many more that I can’t list right now. Everybody, go email or contact your representative and make sure they don’t vote your rights away!
