Persuasive Blog- Technology makes us feel Alone
Previously, I remember closing my basement door and walking downstairs. I turned on the Playstation 4 and played on it for hours. I realized at that moment that I had isolated myself from my family. Once you turn on a computer, tablet, or phone you get distracted from whatever or whoever is around you. People can easily become hypnotized by whatever technological device they are using. I agree that people can feel isolated as I did in the example above. I especially feel like this when I am on my phone or computer. In addition to feeling alone, the other reasons why too much technology might not be a good thing are technology keeps you away from important things, people who spend a lot of time on technology are heavy users, and it is not just children who are on their electronics, parents are also on electronics instead of making face to face interactions with their children. This is how technology makes us feel alone.
First and foremost, technology keeps you distracted from important things. On Google ScienceDirect, it delivers the following, “ Heavy use is associated with less time spent on outdoor activity and sports, socializing offline, and watching tv and more time sleeping at night,” This acknowledges that heavy technology use makes us feel alone because when we are engaged in technology, oftentimes, we are alone. Since technology is taking over, a lot of people struggle with being able to interact with people in a social setting, inappropriate ways. The more people are not able to interact with others, the more they avoid these situations and continue to isolate involving technology. This is one way how technology makes us feel alone.
Additionally, the people who spend a lot of time on technology are heavy users. On Google ScienceDirect it evaluates the following, “We use micro-level data concerning youth aged 15-24 years… , we compare heavy, medium, and light digital media users… Heavy users generally spend more time at home, perform more activities alone, and travel less.” This emphasizes that these people would be expected to be alone more often. Sure you can text friends and family, but it is not the same as reality when you can actually talk to people. You could be separated from family and friends instead of really talking to them in real life.
One cannot deny that technology is amazing and you can use it to chat with people or text message people. Despite the fact that technology is remarkable, it has its cons. It can create social problems outside the world of technology. For instance, people at school are shy because of this. In addition, parents, just like kids, are on electronics and sometimes are not even talking. It is like everybody is in their own world, lost in their own thoughts. For example, you can observe this when going out to dinner. So instead of having a meaningful conversation, they are out to dinner, alone, even though there are other people at the table. As a result, it can even get to a point where it pulls families apart from one another. My side of the argument is better, because if you keep being lonely without any friends then you will suffer major consequences not just with social life, but with health. If you feel lonely, you also won’t feel happy and if you are not happy as well, you have even more of a risk of dying. Therefore, that is how technology makes us separate and feel alone.
In conclusion, there can be a lot of isolation when you are on your electronics all by yourself. In other words, people are isolating themselves without realizing they are doing so. Likewise, electronic use can be addicting which not only isolates people but also can make people use and depend on it more. All in all, it is hard to go outside or to do something besides going on technology because I struggle with this. Go outside and do something with your life if technology makes you feel lonely, maybe even have a nice balance between technology and doing something active.
