Art and Music Class Are Just As Important As Other State Tested Classes

Music in the form of art

It hasn’t been long ago when I noticed something that I have questioned day by day for a while now: why do people think so little of art and music class? I noticed that none of my classmates ever paid attention to those classes, which I thought was inadvertently unfair. The things that they teach you in these classes can and will be used in the future, including creativity (art) and literature skills (music). Art and music class are just as important as other state tested classes.

First, music ties into history and various cultures. For example on the site “The Music of Africa” it states, “although the music of these cultures appears to have developed some characteristics of its own on the African continent, it belongs to the Oriental family of modal music. Its classical, folk, and popular idioms are so distinct from those of the rest of Africa that it cannot, on stylistic grounds, be included in the family of indigenous African music.” This statement represents the claim of music tieing into culture and history by exposing the fact that African music shows strong cultural bonds in which the song also comes with a dance that ‘tells a story’, so to speak.

Next, art lets us express our emotions and views upon various things. An example of this, “Art, as well as math or rocket science, are all callings that different individuals pursue. Every student differs in their own ability and mindset. Writing itself is a form of artwork. Some of the best poems and sonnets come from artists in the form of their words. Art is shown in the ways that you think through something, the ways you show emotion towards it. A skill that can be nourished through study and hard work.” This supports my claim by explaining that art can be anything and everything, (poetry, writing, painting, dance, sculpture; etc) and is a skill that everyone has and can improve on in several forms, depending on whom you are.

Some people would say that music and art class are a waste of time. One cannot deny that children who take art and music classes may not necessarily be pursuing a musical or artistic career, or use the skills and information obtained in the future. However, everything is counted as art, including architecture, poetry, music, and dance. Therefore, conveying the fact that you’re still using the skills you obtained during those classes in many jobs that you may acquire.

Art and music class are just as important for other state-issued careers and classes, (architecture, for instance) such as Math and Language Arts class. Art lets us express what we feel and view in different ways, while music binds into various cultures. In conclusion, people should acknowledge and reveal that art and music class are just as important as any other academic class.
