Ocean pollution should be given more attention by the american media

Our ocean used to be perfect but now it’s not. Nowadays when you look into the ocean you see plastic everywhere. Animals fight for survival but now, they die because of our carelessness to throw away trash. The ocean is one of the most useful things we have on the planet. We need to start to take care of it before it’s too late. Which is why the American media should bring more awareness towards how we are destroying the ocean.

In the first place, ocean animals are dying because of pollution. According to the conserveturtles.org, “Over 1 million marine animals are killed each year due to plastic waste in the ocean. It’s estimated that there are 100 million tons of plastic currently in the ocean.” There is way too much plastic getting into the ocean. Many people would be surprised that only 1 million marine animals die from pollution. Also, many would think it would be a higher number because of the ginormous amount of plastic. The effect of our laziness causes 1 million marine animals to die each year unnecessarily. To summarize, our waste kills marine animals.

In addition, the result of the actions of ocean hunters is wasting marine animals. This is ultimately destroying the oceans fragile ecosystem. A perfectly good example of this is sharks. From blogs.umass.edu it states, “Food tourism also plays a role in the overall problem; people visit Asia and eat the foreign soup, unaware of its hugely damaging effects on shark population in our oceanic system.” It’s a proven fact that sharks are wasted every year to make shark fin soup. The hunters only use the fin of a shark and then throw the shark back in the ocean. When the shark’s fins are removed, the shark cannot swim. Sharks need to swim. If they do not, they drown and die. In conclusion, ocean hunters waste useful shark meat.

Finally, some people may say that plastic industries need to stay in business so that people can keep their jobs. One cannot deny that it would be sad to have people lose their jobs. However, if they stay in business there would continue to be more plastic in the ocean. The author of the article from dosomething.org states, “1.2 trillion gallons of untreated sewage, stormwater, and industrial waste are dumped into the United States water.” If the industry stays in business, our ocean is going to die. We would no longer have animals that we use to provide protein and nutrients. All marine life will go extinct. Therefore, we need to do something now about the plastic industries before the ocean is gone.

All in all, people need to realize how we are killing our ocean. If we do something about this now, then we could have an improved future. But if not, you can say goodbye to the clean water and marine life. An easy way to prevent this is by throwing your trash away in the recycling. Overall, we need to spread the word to save our oceans.

  1. I agree! This topic does not get much attention but it should.
