Do Kids Need Recess?
The running and frolicking of kids in the courtyard, kicking and throwing balls, and talking to your friends? Don’t you miss that? It is very important for kids in middle school to have recess because it is important for the kids to get a good education. Reasons that recess is necessary for middle schoolers are it helps kids reset their brains for the remainder of the school day and helps them learn better by giving them a break. Kids in middle school should have recess.
First, Recess helps reset kids brains for the remainder of the school day. A study done by Heart.com says, “After recess, for children or after a corresponding break time for adolescents, students are more attentive and better able to perform cognitively,” the organization said.” If recess resets your brain for the remainder of the day, then give it to the kids that need it more. To wrap things up, recess helps reset kids brains for the remainder of the day.
Second, Recess helps kids learn better in school. An article by The New York Times says “A study published this month in the journal Pediatrics studied the links between recess and classroom behavior among about 11,000 children ages 8 and 9. Those who had more than 15 minutes of recess a day showed better behavior in class than those who had little or none.” 11,000 kids is a lot for just 15 minutes of recess and with older kids like middle schoolers need to focus to do good in school. In conclusion, recess helps kids learn better.
Finally, Some people might argue they don’t like the idea of recess because they think they think that bullying can thrive during it. Admittedly, bullying can happen during recess. That would not be a problem when the teachers would watch the kids during recess. Teachers get paid to look after kids and to teach them the stuff that they need to know to have a successful career. Watching kids is a small portion of their big job. As a result, bullying will not be a problem during recess when it occurs during the supervision of teachers.
Recess is necessary for kids in middle school. Recess helps reset their brains for the remainder of the day and it helps kids learn better. Schools should consider making room in the days schedule for recess to help kids in the classroom.
