Why Gum Should Be Allowed in School

Why Gum Should Be Allowed in School

Gum is not allowed in school for many different reasons. Gum should be allowed in school because it can help students focus if they have a hard time focusing during class. It can also help improve your memory if you can not remember an answer on a test. Lastly, it can help students with ADD or ADHD to help them so they can focus better and so they don’t get stressed.

The first reason why gum should be allowed in school is that it can help you focus while working on school work. “In one study, students who chewed gum had better final grades compared with the non-chompers.” (CNN health) CNN was saying that gum can help you focus in school because people who have chewed gum focused better and got better grades than people who weren’t chewing on gum.

Another reason why we should be able to have gum in school is that it can help improve your memory. “Gum has been scientifically proven to help kids focus better and to improve their memory. Dr.Kenneth Allen, a professor at NYU’s College of Dentistry, has done research and proved that chewing gum can help you in school.” (The Press Democrat, Elizabeth Norvell) In summary, there was research done to prove that gum can help your memory and help at school.

One of the last reasons why gum should be allowed in school is because it can help students that have Add or ADHD to help them not be so stressed. “Gum might be helpful for people with ADD or ADHD. The simple chewing motion can help you relax when taking a test in school. In fact, according to a Wrigley gum study, 65 percent of athletes chew gum to help relieve stress before or during a game.” (The Press Democrat, Elizabeth Norvell) All in all, people with ADD or ADHD can chew gum to help them so they are not stressing while taking a test and people who play sports chew gum to help as well.

Some people would argue that gum shouldn’t be allowed in school because students could stick the gum under a chair or a desk, but students only usually do it because they are too scared to get up and throw it away so they would just stick it under a desk or chair. In conclusion, students should be able to chew gum in school because it can help you focus especially when you have ADD or ADHD and it can help with memory.
