There have always been arguments about whether cats or dogs are better pets to have, and now your question will finally be answered! Many say cats have less important roles in society, however, this is not the case. It was tough for me to come to a conclusion, but now that I have seen both sides of the argument, I consider myself educated enough to make a decision. While they are both great contenders for being the best pets, cats are still better pets than dogs.

In total, cats are more affordable than dogs, and require less work. Cats cost an average of $300-$800 less a year than dogs, and do not have to be let out to go to the bathroom, go for walks, or need to play. “According to the ASPCA, owning a cat instead of a dog could save you a minimum of $300 to $800 a year — probably more.” This certainly does not mean that they will not play, however. This makes cats better pets than dogs because you don’t have to worry about being away from home for too long because your dog needs to go to the bathroom. If you instead had a cat, you could be away for as long as you wanted or needed. This again is proving that cats are the best! This is one way cats are better pets than dogs. 

Secondly, Owning a cat has also been shown to reduce your chance of dying from a heart attack by up to forty percent. This was in a test completed by the University of Minnesota in 2009 which can be found here. This shows that cats are much more relaxing than dogs, all the while able to be very playful and fun when you want them to be. This also shows that cats are the better therapeutic pet to have. This is another reason cats are better pets than dogs.

Mayor Stubbs

Last, but certainly not least, many say that cats have less important roles in society and history than dogs do. However, this could not be farther from the truth. While it is undeniable that dogs do have important roles in society, they don’t have roles any more important than cats do. Take Mayor Stubbs for example, that cat was mayor of Talkeetna, Alaska from birth until death. If that isn’t an important role, Tibbles certainly had one. Tibbles was a cat who single-handedly decimated a species of bird called the Lyall's wren, which was on Stephens Island at the same time Tibbles and her owner happened to be. David Lyall, the owner of this cat, had been the lighthouse keeper on the island.
All in all, Tibbles the cat changed the future drastically by wiping out an entire species of birds. This is just another reason that cats are more awesome than dogs. For these reasons, cats are better pets than dogs. They are more affordable, less work while being just as fun, can reduce your chances of having a heart attack, and have changed history in many ways dogs have been incapable of. However, despite being more affordable, 2.4 million healthy cats are euthanized each year when they could have been adopted. Consider adopting a new furry friend today, saving them in the process. In conclusion, cats are better pets than dogs.
