Schools Should Start Later
Schools all over the country start too early and it could be dangerous. Most teens wake up around 6:30 am to get ready for school. Waking up this early could be dangerous and cause fatal consciences. Schools should start later.
Firstly, teens aren’t supposed to wake up until 8 am due to biology. A researcher at Brown University found that” At the onset of puberty, nearly all humans (and most mammals) experience a delay of sleep timing in the brain. As a result, the adolescent body does not begin to feel sleepy until about 10:45 p.m...the sleep hormone melatonin begins at about 10:45 p.m. and continues until about 8 a.m” Essentially, teens physically can’t go to sleep early, and then wake up too early in the morning. The statement of “going to sleep earlier” is not the solution. In conclusion, teen brains make it hard to get enough sleep with school.
Most importantly, waking up so early can be harmful and or fatal. A study from the AAP’s sleep working group showed,” Researchers analyzed the harmful effects sleep deprivation—anything less than 8.5 to 9 hours of sleep on school nights—can have on young people. They concluded that poor sleep is linked to increased reliance on caffeine, tobacco, and alcohol. They also discovered a link between sleep deprivation and poor academic performance. Sleep deprivation has also been linked to an increased risk of car accidents in teens.”Essentially, not enough sleep can cause the death of a teen because schools start too early. In conclusion, teens can harm themselves due to sleep schedules.
Finally, people disagree that school should start later due to the worries that teens with after school activities. In fact, that is something to worry about. However, schools can get creative with timings and can work with the students and or parents to see what works. Therefore Teen health is more important than after school activities such as sports.
In conclusion, schools start too early for teens. Teens wake up for school too early and don’t get enough sleep, not getting enough sleep can be harmful, teen health is more important than after school activities. Ways you can help this cause is by informing your school superintendents, principles, and parents.
