Strausburg railroad has had many engines since it had opened. Some are no longer at the railroad but most of them still are and we are going to be talking about one of those engines. Readings 0-4-0 camelbacks made their debut between 1901 and 1903 but the one we are going to be talking about is no1187 which was the first A4 class built. It worked on the Reading railroad until 1906 when it was upgraded to have an 8 wheeled tender instead of 4. After this modification, it later became an A4b class. This engine had 50-inch drive wheels which was perfect for shunting around the yard. Sadly due to the fact that they had to keep stopping meant that it would never go on to pull trains on the mainline 6fcxand stay in the yards most of its life. Sadly after 1946 1187 was the last A4b class left and was later sold to the E&G Brooke Iron Compony and was renumbered to 4. But in 1962 was sold to Strausburg Railroad because they wanted to have another fully functioning steam engine. After it arrived at Strausburg Railroad on November 8, 1962, and had a huge overhaul and did not run until July 4, 1963. Since the first day it ran engineers had issues with not having enough steam to make it down the 4.5 miles of track it had to travel. So only 4 weeks after it started work it was downgraded to a yard switcher. And 4 years later it was retired and renumbered to its original number 1187 and was parked outside of the Strausburg Railroad museum where it sat until it was parked outside the Strausburg Railroad shops. And that is where it sits today waiting for the chance to be restored again.
